For the 18″ American Doll Lover

Do you know how American Girl ® gives back to the community? I am certain they do many charitable deeds, however, I learned about a special fundraiser right in my own community. There is a womens group called the Saturday Club, whose mission is to serve and give back to their local community. Each year, they sponsor an American Girl ® fashion show. It is a wonderful opportunity for girls to model fashions with their American Girl dolls while raising money for a good cause. This year’s event benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and The Saturday Club Children’s Charity Fund. In addition, American Girl ® will donate a percentage of your purchase (through March 20, 2011). Does your community sponsor any events like this? I would love to know…so you can email me at Tori@mydollslife.com.

Many of you might be Irish and getting ready to celebrate St Patrick’s Day on March 17. For those of us that are not of Irish descent, learning about the Irish culture might help us get in the spirit of the holiday. After all, on St. Patrick’s Day…everyone is Irish!! If you live in the Chicago area, you might want to visit the Irish American Heritage Center.  Local communities might also be celebrating with Irish dance presentations, food specialties and parades. Happy Mardi Gras!

Since it is Mardi Gras, a co-worker was celebrating with a traditional French dish…Crêpes! Every year, she makes a complete meal with crêpes.  Appetizers through desserts all made with those delicate, melt in your mouth, pancakes.  Sounds delicious, right? So, I have found a basic crêpe recipe for you  to get you started. I would love to hear how creative you were with your crêpes, so contact me on Facebook at My Doll’s Life®.

1 cup all-purpose flour
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup water
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons butter, melted

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and the eggs. Gradually add in the milk and water, stirring to combine. Add the salt and butter; beat until smooth.
Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each crepe. Tilt the pan with a circular motion so that the batter coats the surface evenly.

For the 18 Inch Doll Lover

Dolls are celebrated throughout the world. Did you know that on March 3rd, the Japanese celebrate Hinamatsuri, or the Doll Festival. It is a time to pray for the health and well being of young girls. Originally, these dolls were thought to possess the power  to hold evil spirits and they were set adrift on boats taking the troubles they held with them. Many homes with female children will set up a display of hinaningyo (hina dolls). Around the display, dedications of peach blossoms, various shapes and colored rice cakes and  sake are made. Originally, these special dolls were hand made from straw and grass. Today, most are mass produced.

Doll Collector’s Weekend Guide

This week, the National Education Association celebrates the 14th anniversary of its Read Across America Campaign. This annual reading motivation program invites students across the country to celebrate reading on March 2nd, the birthday of Dr. Seuss, and continue “booking it” all year.

What started out as a small group of reading parties to encourage reading among youth, Read Across America has been embraced by educators, parents, and even celebrities and politicians! All over the country, including our nation’s capitol, reading events are being held to enlighten children to the joy of reading. So this weekend, why not don a red and white striped stove pipe hat and read a book together as a family. Check out your community calendar of events to see where you might participate in a Read Across America event. Make reading a daily family event!
