For the 18″ Doll Lover

With Earth Day approaching, I have had the opportunity to review a great craft kit by Kiwi Crate. Although they offer a variety of hands on, creative kits for children, this one incorporated the use of wind…a natural resource that ties in very nicely with Earth Day! This kit comes in a 100% recycled box and includes all you need to complete 2 projects; a Wind Car and a Wind Sock. Each project comes complete with its own booklet that details instructions with both written words and adorable illustrations. It even came with a pair of kid sized safety scissors. There are also critical thinking questions for your child to entertain which can easily be tailored for different ages. I love this…each activity is rated for messiness, grownup involvement and gross or fine motor skills! This would be the sort of gift I would have purchased for my children when they were younger and would have appreciated them receiving. Think about all you and your 18″ doll can learn about wind and keeping our world a healthy place to live. To learn more about Kiwi Crate, visit them at www. (photos from

Doll Collector’s Weekend Guide

Earth day is celebrated on April 22, 2012. Just like we all need to take care of our health, each of us can make a difference in keeping our earth healthy. Recycling is an easy way to start. Most waste management companies offer recycling services. Whether or not you need to separate glass from paper, it is very easy to do. Composting is another way to recycle. There’s lots of information available on line regarding this topic. Saving energy is easy to do by simply turning off lights and appliances when not in use. When you brush your teeth, don’t leave the water running! Taking re-usable shopping bags to the grocery store is another way to recycle!  How about recycling your 18″ doll clothes? How many ways do you and your families recycle? How many more ways can you incorporate into your daily lives? If we each do our part, our world will be a healthy place to live!

Tip of the Day for 18 Inch Doll Collectors

Warmer weather requires a new hair style! On the red carpet shows during the Academy Awards, I noticed lots of ponytails! This classic style is easy to do with your American doll. There are lots of tricks to make this simple style look elegant or playful. Add a colorful ribbon or flower to a regular ponytail for a fun look. For a dressier look, brush your doll’s hair and gather it in the back. Leave a small strand near the back out of the ponytail. Once the ponytail is secured with an elastic band, take the remaining strand of hair and wrap it around the elastic band and secure it with a bobby pin. Ponytails are fun and an easy way to give your American doll a new look.

If a rain slicker is not your style, you can greet any rainy day in style with this hot pink satin trench coat and hat set DRTC-HP. The classic double breasted styling has real button closures and the side pockets feature button details. A reversible tie belt and a single layer of ruffles at the sleeve openings are additional details that make this coat so adorable. Your American girl will keep her hair dry with the matching rain hat. Both the coat and hat are lined in a pastel pink plaid lining that compliments the hot pink satin. Matching plaid shoes SPL-PG and a shoulder bag DNP-PG are also available and sold separately.  So let the April Showers continue to bring our May flowers!

For the 18 Inch Doll Lover

There have been many discussions about how dolls can affect the children who play with them. Many critics of the Barbie dolls argue that the doll promotes a body image that is unrealistic for women. Most American girl collectors will agree that the stories built around each doll provides real historic facts and the challenges that each girl faces, whether it be cultural, financial or personal. My daughters played with both in addition to Cabbage Patch, Raggedy Ann and a variety of paper dolls. They just enjoyed the interaction and the dressing, undressing, and hair styling! I enjoyed the imaginative play and creativity they demonstrated.  What do you think? What dolls do you enjoy most?  Do you have a doll that reflects something special in your life?
