Last week was the International Toy Fair exhibition held in New York City. What a blast! There were over 100,000 products on display at the Jacob Javitz Center. For the doll lover, there were collectible dolls, one-of-a-kind dolls, plush dolls, doll clothing, accessories and furniture. I was able to get a sneak peek at some of the new clothing that Sophia’s® was premiering. As you know, My Doll’s Life® exclusively features Sophia’s® doll clothes to fit American Girl® dolls. Wait until you see what’s coming for spring! Be sure to check our site frequently.

Since you and your 18” American Girl® doll have been busy making winter treats for your feathered friends, why not take the entire family out to your local library and check out a book or DVD on identifying birds. Now you can learn more about who’s visiting your feeder! As the seasons change, you can identify different birds that visit, alternate locations for feeders, and specific foods that might attract specific birds. For more bird watching activities in your area, contact the Audubon Society, your county’s Department of Parks and Recreation, or a local arboretum.
During the cold winter months, our feathered friends need to search for food which is less plentiful and many times, frozen! Feeding birds can be a great family activity when it involves making treats and then identifying the birds that come to feed. Here is a simple treat that’s easy to make and a great way to recycle those pine cones that seem to always be underfoot! Supplies: Pine cones, peanut butter, string or yarn, raisins and/or cranberries
Take any kind of pine cone available. Tie a piece of string or yarn (about 12 inches) around the top of the pine cone and make a knot, creating a loop. Cover the pine cone in peanut butter and roll it in raisins and/or dried cranberries.
Hang outside on a branch or stand.
Hopefully, you can position your bird treats near a window or door so that you and your 18” American doll can watch and see who’s coming to dine.

Did you know that the week of January 24-28, 2011 was No Name-Calling Week? This project, created by GLSEN and Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, and consists of over 40 national partner organizations, seeks to focus national attention of the problem of name-calling in schools. The idea of No Name-Calling Week was inspired by the James Howe novel, “The Misfits”. If your school participates in an anti–bullying program, you might already be familiar with activities that promote good will and respect for everyone. This weekend might provide you with an opportunity to begin a conversation with your family about this topic.
Remember…Sticks and stones can break your bones, but names can never hurt you…or can it?
Everyone’s going green and here’s a great way to recycle some of that costume jewelry you have. My mother-in-law had quite a collection of jewelry and going through it all brought back such wonderful memories of her.
Search through your treasure trove and find all the pins…stick pins will not work for this idea. Carefully, remove the pin back with a pair of cutting pliers. If children are assisting with this project, please have an adult do the cutting! Once the pin back is removed, simply glue a round magnet to the back. These magnets can be found in any craft store and usually come in several different diameters. If your jewelry is large and/or heavy, a bigger magnet is best. Be sure that the glue you are using is meant for both metals and plastics…depending on the construction of your pin.
Once dry, you can use these for refrigerator magnets or on magnetic bulletin boards… to proudly display drawings, great homework papers, photos, or notes.
I made quite a few for the holidays and everyone who received them was thrilled. They are fun, frilly, decorative, unique…and green!!!
